Where children choose WHAT, WHEN, and HOW they learn, and can't wait to go to school every day. NO curriculum. NO coercion. NO tests. NO limits!
Freedom School is a small learning pod offering individualized learning opportunities for children 5 to 19 years old. Our school is modeled after Sudbury Valley School which was founded by Daniel Greenberg in 1968. There are currently over 60 so-called "Sudbury" schools worldwide. Freedom School will be the first Sudbury school in Pierce County, and we are currently hosting the learning pod in Gig Harbor.
All Sudbury schools allow the child to learn through real life experiences. True enduring learning only happens when the learner throws him/her self fully into it with no coaxing, bribing, or pressure, and where the learner is entirely free to choose the subject, materials, resources, and teachers.

Children are Sovereign Beings
Sovereignty
We believe that all people, regardless of their age, have the right to choose their own path. By allowing children to explore and find their passions, they inevitably become responsible, accountable and competent. Children who are not forced to follow a set curriculum with a fixed outcome are able to fully embody every aspect of themselves; or to use the more common phrase they "become their best selves" NOT as determined by someone else, but as their own inner nature guides them.
Trust
At Freedom School, we recognize that the will of the child to choose their own path must be honored. The truth is that all people are life-long learners, born with innate curiosity, resourcefulness and creativity. We humans cannot help but to strive for growth. When we trust children to take charge of their own learning, to harness the power of play as a powerful learning tool, they take flight in ways we could never imagine! We need to get out of the way and let our children retain their joy of and drive to learn.
Freedom
Children flourish when they are granted the space to explore the world and themselves at their own pace and in their own unique way. Age-mixing is an important facet of this freedom, as children of all ages become important sounding-boards, sources of ideas, and team-mates in learning and exploring.
Responsibility
Freedom School runs as a true democracy, in which all decisions are made by all staff and children, each having equal voting power. Children learn how to effectively participate in a direct democracy, emerging from school as citizens empowered to truly participate in our country's democracy.
